About two years ago we first brought you news that General Motors was developing a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine that, coupled with direct-injection technology, would serve as the General’s rival to Ford’s popular V-6 EcoBoost engine.
Code-named LF3, performance of the new engine was reported to be similar to Ford’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6, which is rated at 355 horsepower and 350 foot-pound of torque.
It was also reported that the LF3 unit would debut in the Cadillac XTS, though so far the upmarket sedan has only been announced with a naturally-aspirated 3.6-liter V-6.
Fast forward to today and GM Inside News, the same source that broke news on the LF3 engine, is now reporting that GM is working on not one, but in fact two twin-turbocharged and direct-injected gasoline V-6 engines.
The second engine will be a bigger unit based on GM’s 3.6-liter V-6. GM even hinted at such a possibility with the unveiling of a one-off Camaro concept back in 2009 that was developed together with comedian Jay Leno and featured a twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter V-6 tuned to deliver close to 420 horsepower.
Possible applications for the pair of force-fed V-6 engines would probably start with Cadillac’s range of models, including the XTS and next-generation 2014 CTS. There’s also a chance that Cadillac’s highly-anticipated ATS-V, the performance version of the new ATS, will forgo a V-8 engine and pick up a blown V-6 instead.
