Personal information belonging to over 283,000 Honda Canada customers was stolen during a data breach last week, according to Reuters.
The stolen data included names, addresses, vehicle identification numbers and some financing account numbers.
Honda Canada has said that the information that was stolen is not the type commonly used for identity theft or fraud, such as birth dates, telephone numbers, email addresses, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, or dollar amounts of financing or payments.
The information that was stolen was collected in 2009 during a customer mail programme that encouraged Honda and Acura owners to register at the myHonda and myAcura websites.
Honda Canada said the breach was recent.
Honda was tipped off to the hack by suspicious activity on the e-commerce websites in late February and in a letter to affected customers on 13th May, said that it was tipped off by an unusual volume of activity on the sites as well as some unauthorised attempts to access users account information.
