The Republic of Congo's President Denis Sassou Nguesso said Tuesday he planned to call a presidential election for the first quarter of next year, earlier than scheduled.
Under the terms of a controversial new constitution adopted in November after a referendum that would allow Sassou Nguesso to extend his term in office, an election was due to be held in July.
