Algeria will resume coral fishing, suspended for 14 years, at the end of this year after drafting legislation related to this activity, Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Sid Ahmed Feroukhi announced Tuesday in Algiers.
"We will relaunch coral fishing just after the completion of the drafting of laws governing the activity, controlling the technical aspects of diving and the outcome of discussions with professionals," he said at the Forum Radio, adding that the exploitation of this resource was the "best way to protect it."
The minister stressed that his department is making efforts to put an end to the Algerian coral poaching by foreign vessels.
Moreover, Feroukhi indicated that the revision of the law on the fisheries and aquaculture activities- to be tabled soon at the Council of Ministers – will bring new measures of facilitation notably in aquaculture.
In this context, he stressed the need of professionalism in the practice of the profession by encouraging training and investment to promote the production and meet local demand.
"Training is the most important mechanism to modernize the sector which needs qualified labour to master the new techniques," the minister insisted.
The public authorities will reinforce training in this area, by purchasing new training ships.
