Tokyo shares opened the trading Wednesday mixed on weaker-than-expected earnings reports of Nikkei index components, but gains in the overnight U.S. market also supported the market.
At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average inched down 34. 80 points, or 0.17 percent, from Tuesday to 20,294.09.
On the contrary, the broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange edged up 4.05 points, or 0.25 percent, to 1,633.51.
