Tokyo stocks opened sharply lower early Wednesday morning following big losses on Wall Street overnight.
At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was down 243. 58 points, or 1.54 percent, from Tuesday to 15,540.25.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange plunged 22.37 points, or 1.73 percent, at 1, 268.52.
Major decliners included export-related automaker and high-tech sectors, as well as mining, brokerage and insurance issues.
