At least 11 persons, including six children, have died in an overcrowded boat off the Libyan city of Sirte, a well-placed security source said.
Some 82 others were rescued when the vessel was intercepted off Libya's shore of Sirte.
The victims were en route from Misrata to Benghazi.
The concerned authorities were notified to launch an investigation into the incident.
